The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong has focused on preventing suicide and addressing emotional distress since its establishment in 1960, operating an emotional support hotline. We are dedicated to suicide prevention through various services, including emotional support, peer support, suicide crisis intervention, educational services, and training promotion.
We operate the only Suicide Crisis Intervention Center in Hong Kong funded by the government’s Social Welfare Department, training professionals in crisis intervention skills. Our services collaborate with schools, organizations, and government bodies to enhance the training of frontline personnel, particularly teachers, social workers, and other frontline workers. This training empowers them to effectively identify high-risk cases and provide initial support.
Sustainable Development Goal 3, specifically target 3.4, aims to reduce premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by one third. Since suicidal behavior is a significant and potentially preventable cause of premature death, lowering the suicide rate is a crucial indicator within this goal (3.4.2). The focus on suicide prevention aligns with global efforts to improve mental health and well-being, reflecting The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong's commitment to a healthier society.
Through ongoing initiatives and collaborations, we strive to create a supportive environment where individuals in crisis can receive necessary help. By fostering awareness and providing essential training, we aim to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and encourage people to seek help. This commitment ultimately works towards a future with fewer lives lost to suicide, reinforcing the importance of community support and intervention.
