Although Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city, public’s concern and awareness of transgender people issues are not high. As a self-financed NGO, Gender Empowerment devoted in providing a localised concrete support to the transgender community, in their identity exploration and adaptation during gender transition. We also collaborate with different social sectors to explore transgender issues and enhance visibility of the community that are at times closeted due to discrimination and marginalisation. By building communication bridges, we not only elevate the voice of local transgender community but also enable different stakeholders to better their understanding of transgender issues and foster diversity, equity and inclusion in society. We utilise different means to conduct our community education from newsletter, comic release on social media to in person sharing workshops touching different sectors of society. Recently, we also start collaborating with school social workers, counsellors and other professionals on trans youth work. Transgender people are coming out at an earlier age and such change in the community give rise to new service needs and new scope of work particularly in secondary schools. Moreover, we pioneered “Strive and Thrive Scholarship”, a one of its kind life scholarships for transgender people in Hong Kong. We hope this small token of recognition can provide resources for the community to live their life authentically, loving themselves and a drive to pursue their dreams.
