In recent years, a number of oncology drugs have been included in the China Medical Insurance Drug Formulary, resulting in a substantial drop in drug prices. As the prices of similar drugs produced by the same pharmaceutical company are generally 30% to 70% lower than those in Hong Kong, some Hong Kong cancer patients choose to seek medical treatment and purchase drugs on the Mainland. To assist Hong Kong cancer patients with financial difficulties in seeking medical treatment on the Mainland, the Cancerinformation.com.hk Charity Foundation has launched the Cancer Drug Subsidy Scheme and the Free Volunteer Escort Service to help patients who do not meet the current requirements for cancer drug subsidy to purchase cheaper cancer drugs at the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital.
